Taqueria 27

For this "foodie" post I'm going to be blogging about another great restaurant in Salt Lake City. Located above campus on Foothill Drive, Taqueria 27 is a newly opened restaurant serving its own interpretations of Latin American street food. This modern taqueria has a great atmosphere and an even better menu. Known for their tacos, the menu also includes a full list of appetizers, salads, mole dishes, deserts, and an extensive cocktail list. Along with the delicious food, Taqueria 27 also doubles as a coffee shop. Located next door to the restaurant, the Coffee Bar serves a full range of coffee beverages and offers free wifi to its paying customers. Whether you're looking for a tasty taco or place to study (or both), Taqueria 27 is the perfect place to go!

Cafe Trio

For this "foodie" post, I'm going to be reviewing the delicious Cafe Trio!

Located on 680 South 900 East, this restaurant serves brunch, lunch, and dinner. With both inside and patio sitting, this place is great through all the seasonal changes of Utah. The upscale decor but causal atmosphere makes this restaurant perfect for a date or outing with friends. Besides it being a tad expensive, I frequently eat at Cafe Trio for their tasty brunches and their spicy Bloody Mary. Here is a link to their website and some pictures from my last visit!

Sugar House Pub

Since Im 21, I thought it would be a great opportunity to blog about some local hotspots that Westminster upperclassmen love. These posts are for all you 21+ transfer students interested in making the move to Salt Lake City.

Ever wonder where those of us who are 21+ actually go out and find a beer? Contrary to popular belief, people are allowed and do drink in Utah. Compared to other states, the laws in Utah might be more strict when it comes to the amount of alcohol allowed in beer, but the bar scene is always fun. The most popular bar near campus is called Sugar House Pub and is directly across from Sugar House Coffee.

Sugar House Pub has a great atmosphere and plenty to do for those not drinking. Inside, there are two separate bars and an area in the back specifically for pool. Each week there is a live music night and dancing. Besides the actual bars, each side of the pub has tables that you and a group of friends can post up at. The bar opens mid afternoon around 2:00pm and last call is at 1:00am. The only draw back to Sugar House Pub is they don't serve food besides hot dogs and unlimited bowls of pretzels. So if you're looking for a place with delicious bar food, look elsewhere.  Cheers!

Keema

Hey all! This week for my "foodie" blog I'm posting another one of my all time favorite recipes called Keema. This beef style curry is not only cheap but easy enough to make that even the least experienced cook can manage. Served on top of a pile of rice, this tasty dish is perfect if your looking for a filling meal that will make enough for leftovers. Below I have provided the recipe, a picture of the final product, and a list of helpful tips! Hope you all enjoy!

Ingredients
*1 onion
*1 clove garlic
*3 tablespoons butter
*1 pound ground beef
*1 tablespoon curry powder
*1 teaspoon salt
*dash of pepper
*1-2 cans of stewed tomatoes
*2 diced potatoes
*1 package of frozen pease or mixed veggies (pease, corn, carrots)
*Rice

Instructions
*Chop onion and garlic finely, then sauté in butter. Remove from pan. Fry ground beef in pan until browned. Combine onion, garlic, and meat with stewed tomatoes, diced potatoes, frozen veggies, curry powder, salt and pepper. Simmer for approximately 25 minutes. Serves 4.

Tips:
* The recipe serves four but if you want to make it a bigger meal, add more potatoes
* If you want to add some more spice, add some diced jalapeños or Sriracha
* If you don't eat red mean, a great substitution for beef is ground turkey meat

Applications

For one of my earlier posts I talked about the Westminster technology initiative and how technology is developing around our school. For this blog, technology is still the theme but I want to focus on applications that I find useful in my studies. For those of you that are coming to Westminster or already a student, check this post out for helpful information regarding student approved applications!

Alrighty, so the first app I'm going to be reviewing is called Evernote.

Evernote is a perfectionist note taker's dream app. Not only does this app allow you to organize your notes in a clear and easy way but you can also record the lectures and discussions. This app is also great for anyone who is always on the go and needs to access their notes anywhere at anytime. All you need is an computer or smart device, Internet connection, and a free Evernote account. If you have an iPhone, Mac, or iPad, not only can you can access your notes on all of these devises but you can also take pictures to add to your notes. Sharing your notes with another classmate is also possible with just a click of a button!

For the second application, I will be reviewing another web based app call StudyBlue.

This is by far the best study app around! With StudyBlue you can create flash cards and from those cards, the program creates quizzes and a study sheet. Each quiz you take is different from the last and consists of multiple choice, fill in the black, and true/false questions. This application also monitors your progress and allows you to customize your study experience. On an iPhone or smart phone you can only utilize the flash card component but if you access the application online you can take the quiz portion and print the study sheet. This semester I have used this more than any application, especially in Spanish II with vocabulary.

Hope these reviews are helpful! Happy studying everyone!

Dog Treats

Hey everyone! Keeping to the food themed blogs, I've decided to post a fun and easy recipe for your pet. Since I have a dog I figured it would be a great chance to show other college students and prospective students an inexpensive alternative to buying dog treats from the store. Not only are these treats cheap to make, but they also contain a healthy array of nutritious ingredients (bananas, blueberries, oats) that help prevent a wide range of diseases commonly found in dogs.

Prep time takes about 10 minuets and bake time ranges from about 16-20 minutes, depending on how crispy you want the outside of the treats to be. The inside of the biscuit is chewy, which makes them perfect for puppies or senior dogs. Since they contain fruit and do not last as long as other dog treats, they must be stored in a fridge. However they can last about a week outside of the refrigerator if they are sealed in an airtight container. Below I have provided the recipe, pictures from my cooking experience, a list of dog friendly ingredients that can be used as solitary treats or in other recipes, and a helpful list of what to avoid feeding your pup.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup blueberries
1 small banana
1/2 cup milk (soy milk if your dog is lactose sensitive)
2/3 cup rolled oats
1 1/4 cup rye flour

Instructions:
1.)Preheat oven to 400° F
2.)Peel and slice the banana
3.)Place the banana, blueberries and milk in a blender and blend until smooth

4.)Pour into a medium bowl.
5.)Add rolled oats and rye flour.

6.)Stir until thoroughly combined

7.)Drop rounded balls onto a greased cookie sheet (I used a 1" cookie dropper).
8.)Bake for 16-20 minutes. They will be crispy and browned on the outside. Place on a cooling rack after removing from the oven.

*yields about 20 treats depending on the size your dog prefers

Here is a list of some healthy fruits and veggies that are safe for dogs to eat:
Apples
Bananas
Berries
Pumpkin
Broccoli
Carrots
Cauliflower
Green Beans
Peas
Potatoes
Spinach
Squash
Sweet Potatoes
Zucchini

What to avoid:
Avocados
Grapes & Raisins
Mushrooms
Onions

Hope your dog enjoys this yummy treat as much as mind did!

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Since I have been lacking blogging motivation, I thought it would be worthwhile to set a new theme for my upcoming blogs. The theme I ended up choosing is food. I figured would be fun for all you perspective students (and current students) to not only learn about some delicious restaurants located in Salt Lake but also affordable meals and treats that you can make in the comfort of your own kitchen.

For my first "foodie" blog I have decided to share one of my favorite recipes, homemade chicken tortilla soup. This soup packs a spicy punch and is a prefect to make during the cold winter months. If you have a crockpot, you can throw this together before class and come home at the end of the day to a perfect bowl of soup. Below is the recipe and photo of the final product! Hope you all enjoy!

Chipotle Chicken Tortilla Soup
Ingredients
•1 tablespoon canola oil
•1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic
•3/4 pound chicken breast tenders, cut into bite-sized pieces
•1 teaspoon chipotle chile powder
•1 teaspoon ground cumin
•1 cup water
•1/4 teaspoon salt
•1 (14-ounce) can fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth
•1 (14.5-ounce) can stewed tomatoes, undrained
•1 cup crushed baked tortilla chips
•1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
•1 lime, cut into 4 wedges
• 2 seeded jalapeños

Preparation
•Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add minced garlic and chicken; sauté 2 minutes. Add chile powder and cumin; stir well. Add water, salt, broth, and tomatoes; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes or as long as desired (the longer the better!). Top with tortilla chips and cilantro, and serve with lime wedges. Enjoy!
